TRANSPORT OPTIONS ON THE ISLAND

There are two main ferry ports on Isla Ometepe. Moyogalpa and San Jose del Sur. 

Arriving to Moyogalpa:

This is the main port and most of the ferries go here. You have two options on arrival: Bus or Taxi. 

Taxi From Moyogalpa

There are always taxi drivers waiting at this port so there is no need to pre book. We recommend taking a taxi. The journey takes around 45 minutes. The price is US$20 for a normal car or US$15 for a tuktuk if you are alone. Larger mini vans generally just charge US$5 per person as long as there are more than 4 people. You will usually find other backpackers on the ferry who will be prepared to share taxis to save on costs. 

Bus From Moyogalpa

If you wish to take the bus from Moyogalpa you need to check with the driver that the bus is going to Santa Cruz. You may need to change buses in El Quino which is close to Altagracia. The bus is a fraction of the price of a taxi but be warned that the journey is likely to take you at least twice the time. Travel time will be 1.5 to 2 hours where a taxi will only take 45 minutes. The buses are "chicken buses" and are often hot and crowded. 

Arriving to San Jose del Sur

This port is actually closer to Raindance but doesn't always have a taxi waiting. 

Taxi From San Jose del Sur

If you want to take a taxi from San Jose del Sur we would recommend pre booking. The price will be around US$20. Click here for a local taxi number. 

Bus From San Jose del Sur

You will need to walk five minutes from the port up to the main road to the bus stop. The bus times are often changing and aren't the most reliable. We recommend taking a taxi.

Scooter, Motorbike & ATV rentals on Isla Ometepe

Please be careful when renting vehicles on the island, particularly in Moyogalpa. Saving a few dollars on a daily rental can cost thousands of dollars in "damages" if you fall off the bike.
